About Monterey

Mile for mile, Monterey is the most historic city on the West Coast of the United States and, some would say, the most beautiful region in California. Tourists from across the world flock to the area's famous attractions in droves for its historical significance and its stunning natural beauty. Visitors sail, dive, or kayak the stunning Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, explore historic museums and peruse Carmel's many art museums, and motor or hike through Pebble Beach's famed Seventeen Mile Drive. The award-winning Monterey Bay Aquarium sees almost two million annual guests alone.

Monterey History

In 1602, the explorer Vizcaino claimed California for Spain after arriving in Monterey, almost 20 years before the Mayflower landed at Plymouth. Monterey didn't gain importance until 1770, when the second Spanish mission--Mission San Carlos Borromeo de Carmelo--was built just south of Monterey, in present-day Carmel-by-the-Sea. Monterey was the capital of "Alta California", until 1849, and later became famous in literary circles as home to John Steinbeck's Cannery Row.
